It is very important for educational departments to have professional teachers since qualified teaching mostly depends on knowledge and skills of teachers. Deficiency of professional facilitators is a big challenge of Literacy Department (LD)/ Ministry of Education (MoE). Whereas, any methodic training containing appropriate contents about teaching adult literacy and the improvement of literacy course are not conducted for facilitators because the capacity of monitors who conduct such trainings for facilitators is limited due to the financial and management problems for many years.

The objective of “Literacy Facilitators’ Teaching and Observation Guideline” is to provide effective and efficient knowledge of teaching methods in literacy education. In addition, it mentions how to detect and solve problems in literacy classes. Moreover, it includes the ways for LD officials to make good suggestions and how to deliver them to facilitators to improve their classes.

The contents of this manual are developed based on the one of “Technical Support Training” held by LEAF2 project. The training was held in Kabul in June, November and December 2014 and its duration was 3 days. This manual summarizes the contents of this training and was revised for LD officials and facilitators to understand easily.

This manual is mainly composed of four chapters, that is, Chapter 1 ‘Concept of Teaching Method in Literacy Education’, Chapter 2 ‘Teaching Theory in Literacy Education’, Chapter 3 ‘Improvement of Literacy Class’ Chapter 4 ‘Contents of Facilitator Seminar’, Chapter 5 ‘Model Suggestions to Improve Literacy Class Activities’, Chapter 6 ‘Concept of Lesson Plan’ and Chapter 7 ‘Exercise Questions’. And each chapter relates to its’ previous/next chapter
